Robert Stanser M’Nair of Greenfield, Lanarks., marr Edith Edmonstonee, 2nd dau of H. Edmonstone-Montgomerie, esq., London, 9apr 1885 (Glasgow Herald, 10apr1885). Robert Stanser McNair (1857, bachelor, advocate, 4 N. Charlotte St., Edinburgh, son of late Robert McNair, gentleman) marr (9apr1885, S. Kensington) Edith Edmonstone Edmonstone-Montgomerie (1858, spinster, 16 Collingham Pl., dau of Hugh Edmonstone-Montgomerie, shipowner), witnesses H. Edmonstone Montgomerie, J.R. Macarthur (record, ancestry.com); 2nd witness was stepfather of Robert. In 1861 Charlotte H. McNair (b. 1829 England) lived at Milncroft Rd., Shettleston, with her sister and sister’s husband, and her children (wrongly attributed to her sister in ancestry-com) Robert S. McNair (b. 1857 Shettleston) and Charlotte H. McNair (b.1858 Shettleston) (census). In 1881 James MacArthur (head, no occupation, b. 1819 Inverary, Argyllshire), wife Charlotte H. (merchant foreign and colonial, b. 1829 England) and stepchildren Robert S. McNair (law student, B. A. Cantab, b. 1857 Glasgow), Charlotte H. McNair (coalmasters daughter, b. 1858 Glasgow) and 4 servants lived at 10 Huntly Gardens, Govan (census). In 1896 Robert S. M’Nair was an advocate at 4 North Charlotte St., Edinburgh (Slater’s Directory of Scotland). In 1920-21 R. Stanser M’Nair, advocate, 2 Ainslie Pl., was in the Society of writers to H. M. Signet (Edinburgh P.O. Directory). According to McNair book 1923 supplement, in that year Robert was the owner of Greenfield but lived in Edinburgh where he practiced law. Probably in 1929 Greenfield was demolished. Robert studied probably at Uppingham School, Rutland (L. Hooper) and at Trinity College, Cambridge, England, probably until 1875 (college records). Robert Stanser McNair was a Cambridge graduate in 1879 (McNair book 1960 supplement). Robert was apparently in possession of the McNair family bible in 1930 (family letters). From “The Faculty of Acvocates in Scotland” (Scottish record society, 1944): Reg. 13jun1883: Robert Stanser Macnair of Greenfield, BA, only son of Robert Macnair, Craigend, Shettleston, was born 1aug1856 and died 19jun1932, married 9apr1885 Edith (d. 12may1937), 2nd daughter of H. Edmonstone Montgomerie, London.
