Written by their great-grandson, "My great-great grandfather, John Mayes, died in Virginia in 1802. His wife, Mary, died December 19, 1821, most likely in Taylor County, Kentucky. To this union were born two children, Thomas and Robert. Thomas died in 1802. Robert Mayes, my great grandfather, was born March 1766. He married Margaret McClanahan in 1790, and migrated from Augusta County, Virginia to Kentucky and settled near Campbellsville in Taylor County, Kentucky, in 1808, and there established what is now Bethel Presbyterian Church..."
