Robert Lane was baptised on 22nd November 1720 at Studley in Warwickshire, son of Mary Lane, formerly Woodward, and her husband Elisha Lane, a husbandman. Elisha and Mary had a daughter, Mary, baptised at Studley in 1724, after which they appear to have moved away. By 1734 they were living at Bishampton in Worcestershire, about 13 miles south-west of Studley, but a neighbouring parish to Rous Lench, where Robert's mother Mary had lived at the time of her marriage.

Robert’s next confirmed sighting is on 28th March 1744, when he married Elizabeth Emms at Alcester in Warwickshire.

After their marriage, Robert and Elizabeth settled back at Bishampton. They had ten children baptised at Bishampton between 1746 and 1768.

Robert’s mother died in 1754, and his father died in 1762.

Robert appears to have died whilst Elizabeth was pregnant with their youngest daughter. He died on 8th May 1767 and was buried two days later at Bishampton, alongside his parents. He was 46 years old. His youngest daughter was not baptised until eight months after his death.

Shortly after Robert’s death, his widow Elizabeth assigned a lease of some land at Wickhamford, which had very likely been Robert’s lease in his lifetime. Elizabeth survived Robert by 24 years.

Register for the Year 1720 / November the 22d Baptized Robert the Son of Elisha Lane Husbandman & Mary his Wife

This baptism has been linked to the Robert Lane who married Elizabeth Emms on the basis that it is around the time suggested by the age given when Robert died, and Robert is buried at Bishampton in a grave next to Elisha and Mary Lane. It would appear that Elisha and Mary moved from Studley to Bishampton some time between 1724 and 1734, judging by the baptisms of their other children.

  2. Bishampton, Worcestershire: Monumental Inscription (Birmingham & Midland Society for Genealogy & Heraldry).

Sacred / to the memory of / ROB[ER]T LANE / who departed ye life / May ye 8th / 1767 aged 45 years [1721/2] / Farewell my wife and children dear / whome I have left behind / I would have you live share a virteous mind / For, God doth know how soon your turns may be / To lie down in the Grave as well as me / So pray to God your souls to save / There’s no repenting in the Grave.

This grave (No. 56a in the transcript) is between the graves of a John Emes Lane (No. 56) who died in 1800 aged 60 and an Elisha and Mary Lane (No. 57) who died in 1764 and 1754 respectively.
