  9. Even though Robert deserted his infant daughter, his family alwaystreated Mary Helen nicely. Robert's mother even left Mary aninheritance, which she had deducted from Robert's share of her estate.Mary never met her father until she was 20, at which time his firstwords to her were "What did you do with my money?" to which she answered"I bought a house!" Mary was always known for being a "quiet" girl, andthis sudden burst and quick answer brought forth a round of applausefrom her uncle who was present at the time
