This is "Jim's Robert," who wrote for the New Yorker for some years and published at least 2 books.

Elizabeth T. Henderson recalls that when her husband became a C.O. in World War II his family ostracized him. Some time later, Jim's robert came home and visited his family. They told him of the terrible thing Ron had done, and he said, "I wish I'd done that."

ETH believe Robert's wife was a writer as well and may have published a story in Woman's Day.
