of Texas fame. The Hamiltons. after several years and the birth of seven children,
recognized the need for a school and a place of worship. Citizens of the community began making detailed plans for a suitable building and Robert Hamilton conveyed
approximately one acre of land to William Murphy and William Henderson, as trustees, for the building to be used as a house of worship and a school. Construction began immediately and the plain log structure was completed in the summer of 1823. According to tradition. it was built by a William H. Letcher.
