From the Herald Dispatch, Wednesday September 23, 1964 Rites for Sgt. Hager on Friday. Funeral Services for Sergeant First Class Hersel (Herschel) R. (Robert) Hager, 32 a former instructor at the U.S. Army Military Academy at West Point, N.Y. will be conducted Friday at 1:30 p. m. at the Reger Funeral Home chapel by the Rev. Melvin V. Efaw. Burial will be in Oaklawn Cemetery. Sergeant Hager died Sunday in a hospital at Fort Bragg N. C . where he was attending an instructor's school in preparation for transfer to Saigon as a special instructor. In service since 1950, he was a veteran of the Korean War; a graduate of the Noncommissioned Officers School at Fort Sill, Okla.; had completed the airborne course at the Infantry School at Fort Benning, Ga. with safety awards as a parachutist, and had completed several Army Artillery and Missile School courses. He served five years at West Point as supervisor and chief instructor in the artillery training program and as a map reading instructor. While there he was commended for performance of duty on regular and special assignments, named " Outstanding Soldier of the Month" in March 1963 (by Gen. Westmoreland); promoted from staff sergeant to sergeant first class and received additional safety awards. A brother, Sergeant Edward Hager, was killed in a traffic accident at Travis Air Force Base seven years ago. Friends may call at the funeral home tonight after 7 p. m. |
