Robert graduated from high school in Fort Dodge in 1941, and he later attended Fort Dodge Junior College (Iowa Central Community College), where he met his wife-to-be, Ila Mae Tracy, who was also a student there. Robert served in the armed forces during World War II with the Army Medical Corps from 1942 until his honorable discharge in 1946. On April 15, 1945 he married Ila Mae on a three day pass, as Robert was fond of saying. After the war, he received both his Bachelors and Masters degrees from the University of Iowa, in Iowa City, and did extended study at Oregon State University, in Corvallis, Oregon. Robert was a teacher in the business department at Fort Dodge Senior High School until the mid-1960s, when he moved to Iowa Central Community College as a professor of accounting. He served as Chairman of the Business Administration Department there until he retired in 1986. His office was always open to students in need of assistance. Survivors include his only child, Diane Lynn (Dunsmoor) Carney, of Chicago; her husband Patrick L. Carney, also of Chicago; three grandsons, Michael, of New York City, Patrick Joseph, of Chicago, and Conor, of Cambridge, Massachusetts. Also surviving is a sister, Patricia (Dunsmoor) Stephens and her husband Don Stephens, both of Iowa Falls, and many nieces and nephews. In retirement, Robert, an avid sportsman throughout his life, enjoyed hunting and fishing, as well as spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He was a lifelong member of the American Legion, National Education Association, and the University of Iowa Alumni Association. Robert was preceded in death by his parents, Earl and Mae (Beal) Dunsmoor; his wife, Ila Mae, in 2004; his brothers, Douglas D. Dunsmoor and Thomas B. Dunsmoor; and two sisters, Venita Dunsmoor and Earline (Dunsmoor) Frandsen.
