This is a repost and update to a message (same title) originally sent to COCHRAN@ rmgate.pop.indiana.edu 8-31-1996. Three messages will include data on 5 families - 3 ROBERT COCHRANs (two of whom intermarried), PAUL COCHRAN SR., and SAMUEL COCHRAN.
Part I - ROBERT COCHRAN #1, ROBERT COCHRAN #2, and SAMUEL COCHRAN
ROBERT COCHRAN #1 (This number and subsequent numbers are only used to separate families) - b 5-25-1725, m MARTHA ______ 7-23-1751, d prior to 11-17-1789 in Mecklenburg Co., NC. Issue (From Mrs. Mary Tallent Cochrane whose husband was a descendant of this line [MTC]):
1. WILLIAM COCHRAN - b 5-25-1752; m MARGERY MCGINNIS in PA; d 10-2-1829; buried in Spears Cemetery, Rocky River Church, Cabarrus Co., NC.
2. JOHN COCHRAN - b 1-30-1755; d 1-22-1818.
3. JENNET COCHRAN - b 7-23-1758.
4. SARAH COCHRAN - b 3-10-1761; m ______ WHITE; d 6-14-1818.
5. ROBERT COCHRAN JR. - b 6-21-1764; m ANNE COCHRAN (dau of ROBERT COCHRAN #3) 3-4-1797 in Cabarrus Co., NC (Cabarrus Co. was formed from NE portion of Mecklenburg Co. in 1792); d 4-20-1822 or 4-28-1822; buried in Spears Cemetery.
6. MARTHA COCHRAN - b 5-17-1768; m ______ HARRIS; d 1-25-1818; buried in Spears Cemetery.
>From the COCHRAN Folder at the Rowan Public Library, Salisbury, NC [RPL] (date unknown):
"Hearst's American of Atlanta gives query #1095 from Kate T. Cochran of 131 Elm St. Statesville, NC about WILLIAM COCHRAN who came to America about the latter part of 18th century, married in PA. MARGERY MCGINNIS, died 10-2-1829 aged 77 years, while MARGERY was born 5-2-1772 and died 1-24-1857. Have been told that WILLIAM came with some COCHRAN cadets during the Monmouth Rebellion in Scotland."
Issue of ROBERT COCHRAN JR., son of ROBERT COCHRAN #1, and ANNE COCHRAN, dau of ROBERT COCHRAN #3 [From MTC]:
1. MARTHA COCHRAN - b 4-9-1798; d 12-23-1818; buried in Spears Cemetery.
2. ELAM COCHRAN - b 5-13-1800; d 2-12-1813 or 2-12-1815; buried in Spears Cemetery.
3. ELIZABETH COCHRAN - b 8-2-1803.
4. ROBERT COCHRAN - b 5-22-1807.
5. CYRUS COCHRAN - b 4-8-1812.
6. SARAH COCHRAN - b 3-30-1814.
The will of ROBERT COCHRAN #2 of Rowan Co., NC was made 5-26-1806 [RPL]. It names his wife, MARGARET; sons JOSEPH, JOHN, and ROBERT JR.; dau JEAN; grand-dau POLLY MCEWEN; grandson ROBERT (son of ROBERT) and WILLIAM WOODSIDE. ROBERT JR. m JANE JAMISON 4-1-1796 in Rowan Co. The land of ROBERT COCHRAN #2 (446.5 ac on the 1778 Rowan Co. Tax List) was on both sides of the East Fork of Coddle Creek just N of the Rowan-Mecklenburg border. ROBERT COCHRAN #2 of Rowan Co. 2-2-1796 bought 132 ac of land on both sides of Coddle Creek S of the border and on 12-6-1797 sold it to his son ROBERT.
The will of JOSEPH COCHRAN, son of ROBERT COCHRAN #2, was made 6-11-1808 [RPL]. It names his wife ELIZABETH, dau POLLY and ELLY, and son ROBERT NATHAN.
SAMUEL COCHRAN was probably b in Ireland c1722 and d c1772 in Rowan Co., NC (with will). He m SARAH WOODS who was b c1726 in PA and d c1776 in Rowan Co., NC. Issue [primarily RPL]:
1. JOHN COCHRAN - b 1746 in Dublin,Ire. [Cindi Meyer] {c1748 (not in Rowan Co. as per RPL)}; m 1st ELIZABETH PATTON 2-7-1773 in Rowan Co.; moved to Madison Co., KY; m 2nd MARGARET FRANCES SCOTT 8-20-1783 in Lincoln Co., KY (now Madison Co.) ; d 7-5-1823 White's Station, Madison Co., KY [Baxter Cochran, Jim Mills, and Cindi Meyer].
2. SARAH COCHRAN - b c1751 (not in Rowan Co. as per RPL); m ANDREW MCCLANAHAN 5-12--1772 in Rowan Co.; moved to Madison Co., KY.
3. MARGARET COCHRAN - b c 1753 (not in Rowan Co. as per RPL); m JOHN WILSON.
4. WILLIAM ROBERT COCHRAN - b 5-15-1753 (says Madison Co., KY - not true); moved from Rowan Co., NC to Madison Co., KY; m 3-3-1789 SARAH MARGARET GAMBLE in Madison Co., KY; d 4-24-1821 (with will) in Rocheport, Boone Co., MO. Children: ROBERT, JOHN, WILLIAM, JAMES, ANNA WALKEEP, SALLY, JANE, and FANNY. [This information from Coleen Fagan; WILLIAM could not have married SARAH FLEMING 3-29-1824 in Rowan Co., NC as per RPL.]
5. JAMES COCHRAN - b c1757 (not in Rowan Co. as per RPL); moved to Madison Co., KY; d in Madison Co., KY.
6. SAMUEL COCHRAN - b c1759 (not in Rowan Co. as per RPL); moved to Madison Co., KY.
7. ANDREW COCHRAN - b c1760 possibly in Rowan Co., NC; m ANN WOODS 9-17-1785 in Rowan Co.; moved to Barren Co., KY; d there before 1821.
None of these COCHRANs were listed in the 1759 Rowan Co., NC Tax List ("Abstracts of Wills & Estates of Rowan County, NC 1753-1805 & Tax Lists of 1759 & 1778" by Jo White Linn"). The 1778 Rowan Co. Tax List included ANDREW COCHRAN 117.1 ac, JAMES COCHRAN 518 ac, WILL COCHRAN 204 ac, SAMUEL COCHRAN 441 ac, and JOHN COCHRAN polls only. JOHN COCHRAN, the eldest son, had probably sold off his property prior to moving to KY.
