7 February 1896, Robert Grenville Brown, one of the best known citizens of Providence, died at an early hour this morning at his residence, 61 Charles Field Street, in the 51st year of his age. Mr. Brown was a son of Nicholas Brown 3rd, a grandson of Nicholas Brown and a brother of the late John Carter Brown, for whom Brown University was named. He was born in Italy at the time when his father was United States Consul at Rome. Mr. Brown graduated from The Harvard Law School, and was for several years in the law office of Samuel Curry in this city, although he was not engaged in active practice. His brother, John Carter Brown was a member of the firm of Brown & Ives. He married in 1875 Elena, daughter of James A. and Mrs. R. M. DeC. Rhodes. Mr. Brown was not a prominent figure in public life, although well known as the representative from Warwick in the General Assembly. He inherited from his father a fondness for traveling and was prominent in yachting circles.
