Saturday morning about nine o'clock, Robert H. Bateman died at the age of 76 years, death being due to general infirmities of age, though he had been suffering from an heart ailment for some time. Mr. Bateman was active and interested in all affairs of the day, was a great talker and joker and enjoyed a constant social life locally with a large circle of relatives and friends. He was born and reared in Washington parish, being a son of the late Jason Bateman. In his early manhood he married Miss Emma Magee, who survives with nine children, five sons, Lucious Bateman of Bogalusa, Murphy, Herbert and Robert of Franklinton and Emerson Bateman who is now in Alaska and the only member of the family who was unable to be present at his funeral, four daughters, Mrs. Monroe Simmons, Mrs. M. B. Stafford, Mrs. Hugh Burris of Franklinton, and Mrs. C. C. Hennesy of New Orleans, and several grandchildren; three brothers, J. L., Dan and Milton Bateman; two sisters, Mrs. F. M. Magee and Mrs. W. E. Magee. Mr. Bateman was a loyal member of the Franklinton Baptist Church and a member of the Franklinton Masonic Lodge. Funeral services were held at the Baptist church Sunday afternoon at 5:30 o'clock, conducted by Rev. G. A. Nelson, who was assisted by Rev. Ira W. Flowers and Rev. Stennis. Masonic ceremonies were held at the Ellis cemetery where interment was made. A number of relatives and friends from out-of-town attended the funeral.
