Learned to play slack key guitar along with Raymond Kane, slack key artist, while living in Nanakuli. He was an excellent cook and chef, creating his own soups, sauces, salad dressings. He was an above average ice carver, creating ice sculptures for weddings, banquets, and other special occasions. As a boy, growing up in Nanakuli, O'ahu, he would fish with spears and nets, not knowing the rod and reel. It wasn't until after living in Oregon, when his wife, Marian, taught him to use the haole way of fishing. He picked it up quite readily, soon outdoing his teacher. He was always catching the state's limit of trout each time he went out. We grew up eating plenty of trout. We also ate tons of smelt, which Aaron would buy by the bag. The Oregonian (Obituary): A Hawaiian Celebration of Life will be at 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 21, 1995, in Loaves and Fishes Southeast Multicultural Senior Center, 4610 S.E. Belmont St., for Robert Lopaka Aaron Basso, a retired chef. He died of congestive heart failure Dec. 17. He was 71. Mr. Basso was born Dec. 24, 1923, in Honolulu. He served in the Army in World War II during the occupation of Japan. He moved to the Portland area in 1955. He was a member of Oregon Hospitality & Service Union and Hawaiian Cultural Awareness and Education in Portland. He married Joene Sage in 1978. Surviving are his wife; son, Paul M.K. of Dallas; daughters, Cathy of Dallas, and Alice Leihua of Portland; Basso and of Portland, and Florene Anna Montero of Portland; sister, Mildred Cissy Elliott of Rainier; and five grandchildren. Disposition will be by cremation. The family suggests remembrances be to Joene Basso for funeral expenses care of Omega Cremation and Burial Service. (found on www.findagrave.com) 'Bob' or 'Aaron' as most people called him, was part Hawaiian, part Italian, always joking about being a 'Pineapple Pizza'. He was an excellent chef, making his own sauces, soups, dressings, etc. To eat one of his meals was heavenly. He loved to play the old Hawaiian slack key guitar, sing the old Hawaiian songs, and dance the ancient style hula, all of which he was quite good at. He served in the US Army during WWII, and was at Pearl Harbor with his step dad, who was in the Navy at the Sub Base. He passed away because of heart disease. He left behind a wife, Joene, son, Paul MK of Dallas, OR, a daughter, Alice L. of Aloha, OR, and 5 granddaughters. He was a good husband, dad and grandpa. You are missed, dad. Aloha nui loa!!!
