Notes from Mark Faucette: During the great conflagration of the second World War, Robert Stiles Baker was a bombardier and staff sergeant in the 8th Air Force. He was killed in England in a plane collision over Cavendish, England, on July 20, 1944.355 Robert Stiles Baker is buried in the cemetery at Hawfields Presbyterian Church, Haw River, Alamance County, North Carolina.356 His widow, Catherine Louise Berrier, later married John Bastian, and, at the time of this writing in 1997, lives in Lakeland, Polk County, Florida. Robert Stiles Baker’s name appears on a memorial in Graham, Alamance County, North Carolina, to those men of Alamance County who have given their lives in defense of their country. References
