Richard Upton [#31], s/o William Upton [#7] and Mary Maber, b. Danvers 20 May 1716, m. (1) ---, m. (2) Elizabeth Putnam, m. (3) 26 Jun 1746 Rachel Rich, "probably his cousin".
[Note: neither the first nor second wife is mentioned in the detailed coverage of Richard on p. 54, but are only listed in the summary inserted under his parents on p. 34, and no evidence or details are given. All children appear to belong to Rachel, and as no dates, and in the first case, no name, are known, one can't be help being suspicious about marriage #1 and #2. Interestingly, an article in Essex Genealogist, Vol. 20, p. 234, which relies on this source, chooses to only list marriage 2 without mentioning marriage 1 and marriage 3? Reading VRs show a marriage of Elizabeth Putnam to Richard Upton in 1757, i.e., at a time this Richard was already married to Rachel, but the Danvers records give the husband's name as Richard Upham, not Upton (see also, History of the Putnam Family, p. 210). This appears to explain away marriage #2. Marriage #1 is almost impossible to investigate, having no name of the wife, no date of marriage, and no children attributed to it. However, it seems possible it is simply an artifact from the error over marriage #2, since clearly Richard had a wife before he purportedly married Elizabeth Putnam in 1757, based on the children he had, and knowing Rachel was his widow, Vinton may have conjured up marriage #1 to account for this. Finding the actual marriage date for Richard and Rachel in 1746 would then show both marriage #1 and #2 incorrect.]
