- Family Notes.
Richard and Elizabeth Chamberlain Ridgway arrived in 1679 on the "Jacob and Mary" and settled at the Delaware River Falls on the Pennsylvania shore, adjoining William Penn's estate. Richard was granted a license to keep an ordinary, called Crown Inn. He is also said to have been a tailor.
In 1690 they moved to 600 acres near Stoney Brook, Maidenhead Twp., West Jersey, (today on the road between Princeton and Lawrenceville in Mercer County.)
In 1695 they moved to 600 acres on Mattacopany Creek, Springfield Twp., Burlington Co. (In 1979 near Village of Jacksonville on the road from Burlington to Jobstown). Richard gave one acre to the Quakers for a meeting house and burying ground, "Copany" or Old Springfield Meeting of the Burlington MM. In 1987 the building erected in 1775 was still standing, having been converted to a private home.
