A Quick Primer on the Multiple Richard Parks

There is considerable confusion about the various Richard Parks. Any attempt to use Savage or Bond as sources merely leads to massive confusion. In his discussion of the immigrant Richard Park, Richard Charles Anderson says "There certainly was another man named Richard Parks or Parks in Cambridge and neighboring towns, who was of about the right age [to be son of the immigrant], but no record has been found which connect him with the subject of this sketch." There appear to be 4 Richard Parks in the 1600's, often mistakenly compressed by various sources into only 2.

The immigrant married (1) Margery ---, m. (2) Sarah (Collier) Brewster.

The will of James Cutler in 1684 names, as a child, the wife of Richard Parks. Whether daughter, or step-daughter, of James Cutler, she was too old to be married to the later Richard Parks, and since the wives of the immigrant are known, she could only be married to the contemporary Richard Park referred to by Anderson above. Once this is realized, the person referred to must be named Mary, and so Anderson shows it actually means Mary Cutler, not the fictitious Sarah King.

This Richard Park and wife Mary would have been of the right age to have a son Richard b. abt. 1668 [based on age at death} who m. 1690 Elizabeth Billing and lives in Concord where he d. 1725. Tolman has found deeds that strongly suggest this is correct, though Anderson shows his further assumption that this is the son of the immigrant is probably wrong.

Meanwhile the immigrant's known son Thomas has a son Richard, b. 1663, who married bef 1690 Sarah of unknown maiden name (but not King or Cutler) and lives in Newton where he d. 1737/8.
