Richard Norman was baptised on 10th April 1814 at Ridgmont in Bedfordshire, son of Elizabeth Norman, formerly Garrett, and her husband Edward Norman, a labourer. Richard was their youngest child. The family later moved to the neighbouring parish of Husborne Crawley, where Richard would live for the rest of his life.

On 15th February 1838, aged 23, Richard married Mary Lewis. She was 27 and from Husborne Crawley. They went on to have seven children at Husborne Crawley between 1838 and 1854.

The 1841 census finds Richard and Mary and their two sons living at Church End in Husborne Crawley in the same house as Mary's parents. Richard was working as an agricultural labourer at this time.

In 1851, at Long End, Richard was an agricultural labourer, as was his eldest son. Ten years later the family was living at "Town" in Husborne Crawley, probably indicating the then main part of the village along Turnpike Road, which effectively the same area as Long End. At this time Richard was described as a servant. By then his son George had left home and only the youngest two children were scholars. Edward was an apprentice carpenter, Susan a hat maker, Frederick a letter carrier and Henry a house boy.

Richard's sons George and Henry both died in the autumn of 1867.

Richard died at Husborne Crawley on 12th May 1870, aged 56. Mary survived him by over twenty years. The 1881 census finds her living on the High Street in Husborne Crawley, working as a lace maker and living with her daughter Susan, a hat sewer.
