Richard Morton's origins have yet to be established. His first confirmed sighting is on 7th February 1771, when he married Jane Harpham at Sutton on Trent in Nottinghamshire. Richard was living at nearby Norwell when they married, and they settled there after their marriage. In 1772, just over a year after their marriage they had a daughter, Ann, baptised at Norwell. Jane died later that year. On 7th February 1786 (exactly fifteen years after his first marriage), Richard remarried. His second wife was Elizabeth Fernihough (or Ferney) and they married at Norwell. A John Morton, who was a wheelwright of South Muskham, acted as bondsman for their marriage licence, who was presumably a relative. Richard and Elizabeth do not appear to have had any further children. In 1803, Richard's daughter Ann married at tailor called Thomas Hand at Flintham. Richard wrote his will on 15th December 1810, in which he was described as a farmer. He was presumably on his death bed when he wrote it as he was buried just three days later at Norwell. Elizabeth survived him by over 23 years. References
