"Richard F. Mitchell, father of John Lloyd Mitchell, was born February 21, 1830, near McKeesport, Pennsylvania, and was a son of James and Jane (Sarver) Mitchell. The boy grew up in Westmoreland county, attending the common schools up to the age of fourteen, and then finding employment on the railroads and in the mines. In August, 1861, he enlisted for three years in Company C, Seventy-seventh Regiment, and in 1864 reenlisted for three years or the duration of the war. On December 6, 1865, he was honorably discharged at Victory, Texas, and went to Philadelphia, where he remained until paid off in January. In politics he was a Democrat. He and his wife were members of St. Paul's Lutheran Church. Mr. Mitchell married (first) Emma, daughter of John and Harriet (Dell) Laughner, and their children were: William H. and Emma Jane. Mrs. Mitchell died February 10, 1870, and Mr. Mitchell married (second) Rachel R. Adams, whose family record is appended to this biography, becoming by this union the father of the following children: John Lloyd, mentioned below; Susan, wife of Walter Dick, of Greensburg; Harriet, wife of P.T. MITCHELL. The good citizens of Beatty claim as one of their number Richard F. Mitchell, a native of Westmoreland county, born February 21, 1839, son of James and Jane (Sarver) Mitchell. Until reaching the age of fourteen Richard F. Mitchell attended the common schools, and then obtained employment on the railroad. After working there for some time he went to work in the mines, where he labored in all thirty years. his term of service being interrupted by the Civil war. In August, 1861. he enlisted for three years in Company C, Seventy-seventh Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteers, and served until 1864, when he re-enlisted for three years or the duration of the war. He served in all four years, four months and nine days, and was honorably discharged December 6, 1865, in Victory, Texas. He then went to Philadelphia, remained there until January, when he was paid off, and reached home January 17, 1866. He is a Democrat in politics. He and his wife are members of St. Paul's Lutheran church. Mr. Mitchell has been twice married. His first wife was Emma, daughter of John and Harriet (Dell) Loughner, by whom he was the father of three children: William H., Emma Jane, and John G., deceased. The mother of these children died February 10, 1874, and Mr. Mitchell subsequently married Rachel R. Adams. ---History of Westmoreland County, v.3, p.468. References
