The Catherine Jewell who married Richard Lewis in Botetourt Cot., Va. was the dau. of Joseph Jewell. Joseph's will in Cumberland Co., KY. WB C/457, signed 24 July 1839, rec. 13 aug. 1840 names dau. Catherine Lewis, granddaughters Celina and Serena Lewis, granddau. Polly Black: Louisa Keeton, Patsey Cox, Susannah Lackey and Patsey Ferguson.
Richard Lewis was the son of Thomas Lewis of Lewis Cr., Cumberland Co., KY. Thomas moved from Botetourt or Franklin Co., Va. to Cumberland Co., KY. ca 1800. Joseph Jewell was Lt. in New York Militia for which he received a pension 12 April 1834, age 82 years. Joseph Jewell in his pension application stated in 1832 that he was 80 years of age, that he was born in Huntington Co., N. J.; went to Orange Co., N. Y. in 1776, to Virginia in 1784 and to Cumberland Co., Ky. in 1808. He also stated that his daughter was Sarah C. Lewis. [C. was for Catherine and in most records she is listed simply as Catherine.]
