Will Transcript
- February Court 1779
- In the Name of God Amen I Richard Jones (fork) of the County of Halifax being very sick and weak of body, but blessed be God of a sound and perfect disposing Memory do herby [sic] revoke all former Wills by me made whither written or verbal and this to be my last Will and Testament Viz.
- Imprimis I give and bequeath my Soul to God that gave to me and my body to the Earth to be decently buried at the discretion of my Executors afterward named.
- Item it is my will that my Debts and funeral Expenses be first paid and discharged.
- Item I give and bequeath unto my son Robert Jones four Negroes Vizt. Nan, Isack, Sarah and Charity to him and his Heirs forever.
- Item I give and bequeath unto my son Richard Jones the Plantation where I now live as also one hundred and fourteen Acres of Land which I bought of Samuel Harris joining Burwells Lanes and the Lands where I now live as also two hundred and twenty Acres of Land called Rockey Creek Tract to him and his Heirs forever.
- I give and bequeath unto my son Richard Jones three Negroes Ben, Alse? and Tom to him and his Heirs forever.
- Item I give and bequeath to my daughter Melisent Dennis and her three Children Seerito Dennis, Matthew Dennis and John Dennis three Negroes Rachel, Martin and Nanny to be equally divided between them when her son John Dennis comes to the age of twenty one years to them and their Heirs forever.
- Item I give and bequeath unto my daughter Lucy Christopher one Tract or Parcel of Land on Williis? Creek to her and her Heirs forever as also on[e] sorrel Mare which I bought of Edward Wades Estate as allso one feather Bed and furniture she to have her choice as allso two Negroes Violet and Tam to her and her Heirs forever.
- Item I give and bequeath unto my four Children Robert Jones, Richard Jones, Meliscent Dennis and Lucy Christopher all the rest of my Estate not before given to be equally divided between my four Children. my Will and desire is that my Estate shall not be appraised.
- I do hereby appoint my two sons Robert Jones and Richard Jones Executors of this my last Will and Testament.
- In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and Seal this twenty third day of January one thousand seven hundred and seventy nine.

- At a Court held for Halifax County the 18th day of February 1779
- This last Will and Testament of Richard Jones deceaaed was Exhibited in Court, and the same fo as proven by the Oaths of three of the subscribing witnesses, and ordered to be recorded. And on the Motion of Robert Jones and Richard Jones the Executors herein named, who made oath hereto according to Law, Certificate is granted them for obtaining probate hereof in due form they giving Security whereupon they together with George Boyd and Marston Clay thir securities entered into and acknowledged Bond for the same according to Law.
