September, 1998 Las Vegas, NV Dick Herrmann's funeral eulogy
The first though Rae Marie, my spouse, and I had when we heard that Dick had died was Frank Sinatra and the song; "I Did It My Way". It's so descriptive of Dick. Dick had a wonder lust. As a kid Dick worked on the ships I on Great Lakes. They'd deliver grain, automobiles, clothes etc from Duluth to Buffalo to Chicago etc and be gone for weeks at time. Then he joined the air force and spent a lot of time in the Panama Canal Zone protecting us from Manual Noriaga. Then he returned to Buffalo and met his bride, the young and gorgeous June Garrold. They married and headed for Texas. Then on to Louisiana and then on the Nevada, then on to heaven. Along the way the happened to have five kids. Quite a journey Richard! In Las Vegas I think Dick really found himself. He and June found people with dreams similar to theirs and they began a mission to build a home that became New Vista Ranch! What the they accomplished is really remarkable. It staggers the mind when you think of where they started and where they are today. Beginning with nothing but a need, they raised funds, selected land, designed homes, built homes, staffed the houses and filled them with people in need. Today there are 6 homes, animals, gardens, vehicles, love, peace, joy happiness. Unbelievable, simply unbelievable. Let me end with this..... And the Lord God said: I myself will dream a dream with you. Good dreams come from me you know. My dreams seem impossible, Not too practical, Not for the cautious man or women, A little risky sometimes, A trifle brash perhaps, Some of my fiends prefer To rest comfortably In sounded sleep, With visionless eyes. But from those who share my dreams, I ask a little patience, A little humor Some small courage And a listening heart. I will do the rest, And wonder at their daring; Run and marvel at their speed; Build, and stand in awe of the beauty of their building. You will meet me often as you work, In your companions, who share your risk, In your friends, who believe in you enough To lend their own dreams, Their own hands, Their own hearts, To your building. There will be sun-filled days, And sometimes it will rain. A little variety! Both come from me. So come now. Be content. It is my dream you dream; My house you build; My caring you witness; My love you share; Build my house and it will be a house of gladness. You know Dick was greeted in heaven by his son Keith and our Mom and Dad. What a celebration that must have been. And knowing my dad and my brother the party is still going on. Rest now my brother, you've done a wonderful job, and you did it your way!!
