[Alamance County_Feb 2006_backup.FTW] He was educated at the Univ. of N.C., Chapel Hill, graduating with honors at the age of 18. He was admitted to the Bar, and was a law partner of Alexander H. Stephens, Vice President of the Confederacy, in Ga., for a while. He was involved in Mississippi politics in the early 1840's. He served in both branches of the Legislature, was President of the Senate and Ex Officio Lieutenant Governor, Attorney General, Judge of the Circuit Court, and, for many years, Treasurer of the State of N.C. He was a powerful and impassioned speaker and was spoken of as "the gifted orator from North Carolina." He moved to St. Louis, Mo. about 1853 or 1854 and became prominent in his profession as both a lawyer and a judge. He spent the last years of his life in TX |
