Richard Dines Doyle was a Captain in the Boer War, DSO, Doyles Australian Scouts. Doyles Australian Scouts was a small body of scouts attached to General Walter Kitcheners staff. In the book "The Colonials in South Africa, 1899 - 1902, Their Record, Based on Despatches" by Captain John Stirling it says of Doyles Scouts: "This was a corps of specially selected men, raised by Captain R.D. Doyle of the New South Wales Forces. He had served in the 6th Imperial Bushmen and he 3rd Regiment of New South Wales Bushmen. The officers and men were not, however, restricted to those from New South Wales. The small corps did most excellent work in the latter stages of the war, and for its numbers gained a large proportion of Mentions". Following the Boer War he married and settle in South Africa later joining the Dept of Agriculture and in 1904 became Commissioner of Lands in the Waterberg District of the Transvaal.
