About Richard E. Coe

Richard Elrich Coe was born 2 February 1907 in New York, the son of George Clark Coe (1873-1946) and Helen Augusta Brown (1878-1966). He was a descendant of John Coe who immigrated from Suffolk, England, to Stamford, CT, in 1640.

Richard became a very successful advertising executive for many years, but later dedicated much of his time to family history research and helping others. He served as the Librarian and General Vice President for the Sons of the Revolution, an organization founded in 1876 by members of the Society of the Cincinnati wishing to broaden participation in preserving the American Heritage on the eve of this country's centennial. Its mission is to promote knowledge and appreciation of the achievement of American independence and to foster fellowship among its members. Richard was found frequently helping others at the Sons of the Revolution Library in Glendale, CA, and his assistance was invaluable to fellow family history researchers.

Richard Coe died on 17 January 1987 while in the final preparation stages of a book on his ancestor John Coe, and unfortunately his book was never completed or published. His contributions to family research and especially to the Sons of the Revolution will be appreciated by the many that he assisted throughout his life.

Richard Elrich Coe, a descendant of this John Coe, spent many years researching this family. With considerable effort, he put together a remarkable family history. A successful advertising executive, he was a brilliant man. He sent me several excerpts from the book as he prepared it for publication. I was overwhelmed at the depth of his research and the detail and clarity of his presentation. Unfortunately, he died during final preparation, January 17, 1987. The book was NEVER published.

Richard Elrich Coe, who was born February 2, 1907, in Lycoming, NY, was very active in Coe genealogy.A successful advertising executive in New York, Arizona and California, he served as a field director with the American Red Cross during WW II. Subsequent to joining the Sons of the Revolution in 1965, he held a number of positions with the organization, including State Secretary and Genealogist (1965-1987), Library Director of the Sons of the Revolution Library (1979-1987), General Vice President of the Genealogical Society of the Sons of the Revolution (1970-1979), and Editor of the "Flintlock & Powderhorn," the national publication of the Sons of the Revolution (1975-1985).In 1986 he was elected Honorary President for Life of the state society for his many years of service and dedication to the organization.

He also was active in other organizations. He was California State Governor of the Society of Colonial Wars (1976-1977), Governor of the Order of the Founders & Patriots of America (1977-1979), Los Angeles Colony Governor(1972-1979) and State Deputy Governor (1977-1980) of the Society of Mayflower Descendants, and Herald of the National Genealogical Society (1970-1987).

Richard was a descendant of John Coe, who was born in 1588 in Suffolk, England, and who immigrated to Stamford, CT, about 1640, son of Henry and Mary (Vincent) Coe. For years he worked on a comprehensive history of the descendants of John Coe of Stamford, CT, and Rye, NY.Very sadly his work was cut short by his untimely death, January 17, 1987, in Glendale, CA.He was my friend and he is sorely missed.
