After some thought, I think that the Richard who is James A.'s father may well be Richard IV.

The original Richard who perhaps married Elizabeth Cardwell, had a son Richard who married a Jane.

They had a son Richard whose first wife was Kizzah Pearce, and they in turn had a son Richard. I have nothing on him other than his parents lived in Tennessee at the time of James' father's birth in 1826.

Richard III and second wife Lucy Rushing moved to Tuckerman, Arkansas. He apparently was a sheriff who got into trouble with the law himself. As James' father Richard is listed with a Tennessee birthplace in the 1860 census, it could well be that he is Richard IV who previously has been "missing". The age, name, and birth place all fit.
