Early in 1484 Richard was given a lease from his father for twenty years of the manor of Middleton. In 1487 Richard Ashton obtained a general pardon from Henry VII. He was made a knight in 1497, and held the manor of Middleton by the service of a knight's fee, until his death, 28 April 1507. The clear value at that time was estimated at £109 6s. 8d.

Sir Richard Ashton succeeded his father to the estate at Middleton, 3 Henry VII. He married Isabel, the daughter of John Talbot, of Salisbury. He was knighted for his behaviour in the Scottish war under the Lord Strange, 7 Henry VII. (22 August 1491-21 August 1492)
