Notes for Ebenezer MUDGE:

Ebenezer Mudge, son of Micah & Mary, b. in Northampton, Mass., Feb 26, 1683. d. Sharon, Conn. April 21,1758, age 75 years. He married Abigail Skinner, Jan 13, 1708. She was born in Malden, Mass Feb. 17, 1691 & died in New Lebanon or Canaan N.Y. about 1766 They raised a numerous family, six sons and six daughters, all of whom were married and living when Ebenezer died. They were very prolific, he left twenty-five adults and some eighty grandchildren to mourn his death. Ebenezer's family moved to Lebanon, Conn. about 1697, he farmed , bought and sold land there and in Hebron and Colchester till 1737. He apparently sold all his holdings at that time and with his wife and family and Nathaniel Skinner (his wife's brother) and his family moved west to the new townsite of Sharon, Conn. In 1738 Ebenezer drew the twenty-fifth home lot lying on both sides of the Town Street (now The Green) and enbracing properties later occupied by Capt. Lines, Baldwin Reed, Major Gould and Skinners. In 1740 he sold the lot to Cornelius Hamlin and Mary (Mudge) Hamlin, a daughter and they built a house on the property. The Sharon Historical Society now stands on the same piece of property. In 1743 Ebenezer settled on the western border of "Mudge Pond" a beautiful small lake on the outskirts of Sharon. A section of Sharon was called Mudge Town. He served in various town offices and with his sons built and owned the first sawmill, gristmill and ironworks in Sharon. When he died in 1758 his widow, six sons, six daughters and six sons in law signed an agreement, as heirs, to settle the estate without administration. It was percieved a remarkable document as it not only showed the longevity of the family but that they all had a good education. (in that day many of the higher classes could not write but all of his children signed their names.) (As written by Albert Mudge)

9. Mary ALEXANDER, born October 20, 1648 in Windsor, Hartford, CT; died 1728 in Hebron, Tolland, CT. She was the daughter of George ALEXANDER and Susanna Sage.

Notes for Micah MUDGE:

Micah & Mary appear to have been among the original settlers of Northfield, Mass., but the indians burnt their village and drove them off in 1675, as they were dissatisfied with the amount of the original payment in 1671. A deed was signed by Micah Mudge and two others on behalf of the settlers in 1682 paying the indians additional monies where upon they were allowed to resettle Northfield. There were twenty-three signatures including those of George & John Alexander & Micah Mudge on the application filed with the General Court of Boston for the formation of the Northfield plantation. He moved to Lebanon, Conn. about 1679 and having had some experience as a surveyor assisted in laying out the town and was granted land at various times which appears to have totaled one hundred and twenty acres or more. In 1705 he sold one hundred acres to Joseph Tilden (his son-in-law) for eight pounds. Micah was one of the nine persons who organized the First Congregational Church in 1700. His wife was the only female until 1707. In 1717 he sold thirty acres of land for one hundred and fifty-five pounds. He seems to have bought and sold land for speculation. He moved to Hebron, Conn. in the fall of 1717 where he stayed until his death in 1724. (written by Albert Mudge)
