Facts and Events
Looking for both ancestors and descendants of Reuben Lomas, christened Quarnford, Sts., 1822, son of John Lomas and Ann <>. The IGI indicates 8 children for John and Ann: Mary, 1814; John, 1816; William, 1818; Rupert, 1820; Reuben, 1822; Ann, 1824; Dinah, 1826; Harriet, 1828. Reuben married Sarah <> abt 1841-1842; first son, John, b. 1842, St John Evangelist, Westminster. Reuben then joined the 99th Lanarkshire Volunteer Regiment and shipped to Australia 1843-1856, servingprimarily at Paramatta, Norfolk Island, and in Tasmania. It appears Sarah travelled with him; a second son, James, was born in 1852, and not born in England. Reuben joined the Cinque Ports Volunteer Rifle Corps in 1863, and transferred tothe Lincolnshire Volunteer Rifle Corps in 1865. He was discharged in 1880, and died soon after. His son John was a Royal Navy signalman, pensioned by 1881 and no further trace. His son James was a house painter/construction foreman, married Emily Elizabeth Buckley in 1877. A son died in infancy; 4 girls survived - Emily, who married Albert Hall in 1904; Marian, who married Leon Lees in 1904; and Gertrude and Kate (Kitty) about whom little is known. Any information on any Lomas from Quarnford much appreciated. The family seems to have relocated prior to 1851 (at least, they`re not listed on the 2 census sample); and I can`t find anyof them on the 1881 census except John and James. My greatx2-grandfather, Reuben LOMAS, served with the 99th at Van Diemen`sLand, Norfolk Island, and in Paramatta and Port Phillips. I believe the99th came out to Sydney in 1842 aboardthe `Asiatic`, likely as convict escorts. I have a fairly detailed account of his service based on paybooks, but nowhere can I find mention of his dependents. Later documentation from England indicates that Reuben was married to Sarah (maiden name unknown); that they had a son John in 1842 and a son (my great-grandfather) James in 1852. Censuses indicate both boys were born in Westminster, but if James was, this casts some doubt on his parentage, and in fact St Cath`s has no record of his birth in England. I know Reuben was at Hobart Town until March 1852 and again from July 1854; he spent theintervening period at Norfolk Island. This indicates James may well have been born in Hobart Town.> First, I`m interested in any accounts of the 99th Regiment, particularly any `clues` as to the day to day life of the rank and file (Reuben never rose higher than Sgt.) and their dependants; secondly, I am interested in information on how I could find the birth record of James LOMAS if it exists. No-one seems to know whether military dependants were registered by the regiment or by the civil government; I`m at a loss as to where to begin. And thirdly, if information has survived, I`d be pleased to have any information available regarding the 1842 voyage of the `Asiatic`.>> Thank you much for your assistance.>> Kat Hall Stubbs> Ontario, Canada Name: Reuben Lomas Sex: M Birth: 1822 in Quarnford, Staffordshire, England Death: 25 FEB 1881 in St. George Hanover Square, Westminster, London, England of carcinoma of liver Military Service: 1843 Guard aboard convict ship `Asiatic` England - Australia Military Service: BET. 1843 - 1856 Australia, Tasmania, New Zealand Military Service: 1844 Guard aboard convict ship `Maitland` Australia - Norfolk Island Military Service: 1857 Transferred to 2nd Battalian, 21st Regmt, probably due to health Military Service: OCT 1863 pensioned out of regular army at 2shillings per day Military Service: BET. 23 DEC 1863 - 23 DEC 1864 Served with1st Cinque Ports Rifle Volunteers Military Service: BET. 8 APR 1865 - 12 APR 1880 Sergeant Instructor, First Class, 17th Lincoln VR Corp Event: Christened 15 SEP 1822 Quarnford, Staffordshire, England Event: Misc IGI listing spells his name RUBIN Occupation: BEF. 1842 Engineer Event: Enlistment 1 SEP 1842 99th Regmt, Chatham Depot, London, England Residence: 1872 Quadring, Lincolnshire Reference Number: 230 Medical Information: regular hospitalizations, undisclosed cause, from 1847 to 1857 (possibly resulting from service in Australia); death certificateon file
