Biography

René Marcel Schoennauer was born in San Francisco, California on July 15, 1930 to parents, Julia and Joseph Schoennauer, the youngest of three children. As a youngster he became interested in the ocean, airplanes and boats, all of what would become lifelong interests.

René served in the Army during the Korean War with the 1st Calvary Division. After the war, he attended San Jose State and graduated with a BS in Aeronautics, and worked as an aeronautical engineer for Boeing Aircraft in Seattle, Washington and Lockheed Aircraft in Sunnyvale, California. He also owned a custom cabinet shop in Santa Cruz for 25 years. He retired in Scott Valley and operated a hay ranch on Kidder Creek.

René always kept his hands busy and his interests led him to build multiple private homes, three commercial fishing boats, and two home-built airplanes. He was a member of both the national and local chapters of the Experimental Aircraft Association, and was a charter member of the Scott Valley Pilots Association. He spent the last years of his retirement in Fort Jones, California.

René passed away peacefully on January 2, 2015 at Madrone Hospice House in Yreka, California, at 84 years old. His wife, his four children, ten grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren survived him upon his death.
