... Not far from the centre of the Hill Burying Ground on Broad street, Salem, are two white marble head-stones with these inscriptions:
In memory of - Capt. Ephraim Emerton - who departed this life - 24 Aug. 1824 - in the 76th year - of his age. - From life's lov'd scene submissive he retir'd, - And with a Christian's calmest hope expir'd.
In memory of - Mrs. Remember Emerton - wife of Capt Ephraim Emerton - who departed this life - 19th January 1825 - in the 73rd year - of her age. - Lo soft remembrance drops the feeling tear - And real friendship stands a mourner here.
The stones are still, 27 June, 1881, whole and firm, but the weather has roughened them so that the inscriptions are not so easily read. ...
