Rebecca Nichols Smith

Connecticut, USA
Death: Nov. 4, 1788
Chatham
Morris County
New Jersey, USA
Mrs. Smith, nee Rebecca Nichols, died "Aged 81 years & 25 days". She was the widow of Peter Smith, buried nearby. A small gravestone immediately next to hers is that of the couple's 3-year-old daughter, born when Mrs. Smith was in her 40's. Unlike the little girl's grim, "winged skull" soul effigy, Mrs. Smith's of the later portrait style, and appears to be the work of cutter Uzal Ward of Newark. Made of locally quarried brown sandstone, the pear-faced soul effigy in its tympanum has scarf-like wings, a fiery crown, and is flanked by 6-pointed stars, giving it an exhuberant look.
