    Catharine Smith
    Birth: Feb., 1751
    Death: Apr. 21, 1754

Catharine, the 3-year-old daughter of Peter and Rebekah (a.k.a. Rebecca) Smith, was born when her mother was 43 years old. Mrs. Smith, who lived to be 81, was buried beside her 34 years later.
The gravestones of mother and daughter demonstrate the changing tastes of the colonial era. Little Catharine's soul effigy is of the grim, "winged skull" type popular during the 1600's and early 1700's, while her mother's has the more cheerful, "portrait" type soul effigy, typical of the mid-to-late 1700's. Both gravestones are made of locally quarried brown sandstone, but Catharine's appears to be the work of William Grant, a Boston carver who moved to New Jersey during the 1740's, while her mother's appears to be the work of Uzal Ward.
