Ray S. Ayer is listed in various genealogies such as the geneology of the Tremaine family, as "Raymond S. Ayer", this is incorrect, his name was "Ray Sherrod Ayer". He had polio, walked on two canes, owned a horse farm in Oxford Michigan and wrote a column for the Detroit News called "The Roadside Philosopher".

One of the "fortunes" he made was in selling horse manure mixed with sand to women in Detroit as potting soil.
