"2. Ralph Haburne, baptized at Cottingham, Yorkshire, 1 Jan. 1569/70, buried there, 17 Apr. 1638; married first, at Cottingham, 2 Dec. 1593, Maud Jecles, who was buried there 5 May 1623; married second, at Cottingham, 4 July 1625, Frances Metcalf, who survived him. … The first marriage record of Ralph states that 'Radulphus Habrone & Matilda Jecles' married 2 December 1593. The Latin form was used for both names, and Matilda is the latinized form of Maud. In the burial entries, 'Magdalena Haberne' was buried 5 May 1623. Ralph married a second time two years later, and unless this entry refers to the first wife, there seems to be no record of her burial. No Magdalen Haburne appears otherwise in the Cottingham registers. It is to be remembered that Magdalen was softened in pronunciation to Madeleine or Maudlin, and that Maud is a diminutive form of that name. The probable explanation is that Ralph's wife was actually called Maud, but that her name was in the earlier entry latinized to Matilda, and in the later entry lengthened to the formal Magdalena."
