"Hearing of the fine lands of the Platte Purchase, Mr. and Mrs. Estes came to Platte county at an early date and purchasing a farm a few miles east of Platte City reared their family. Uncle Bart and wife were quiet, unassuming people attending strictly to their own affairs and retaining the love and respect of all who knew them. Mr. Estes died July 21, 1896, and Mrs. Estes purchased a farm near that of her son Robert, one-half mile east of Tracy where she lived up to the time when she was called to be with her Father ..." Was a lifelong Baptist. "About eight years since she received a paralytic stroke from which she never recovered. ... Though her children endeavored to persuade her to give up her home and come and live with them she said with her characteristic energy and industry that she preferred the independence of her own home and remained there until the last summons came... "Her children are John Estes of Sugar Lake, Mrs. Elmore Breckenridge and Mrs. D.W. Fisher of near Platte City, Mrs. W.P. Lutes of St. Joseph, Sam G. and Merritt of Liberty, Kans., and Robert of Tracy." She's buried in the Platte City cemetery. |
