Rachael had surgery to replace a heart valve that had been defective since birth. She was in the hospital for about 27 days and never recovered from a 2nd operation to repair damage caused when she coughed and tore the staples from her breast bone. Due to medication her bones were very brittle. She passed away on January 11th, 2002 at Saint Luke's hospital in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Funeral arrangements were handled by the Goetsch funeral Home in Monticello, Iowa
