CHAPTER XXXII.

FREEDOM TOWNSHIP.

The township was set off from Liberty in 1838. As early as 1740 it was included in “the Manor of Maske,” and the original settlers shared in all the troubles and uncertainties, regarding titles to their land peculiar to those times. Among the first land improvers on this part of the “Manor” were many of the men whose names will be forever identified with the settlement of the western part of Adams County. Samuel Gettys owned land on Middle Creek, and it is supposed that the following named settled here on the dates given: QUINTIN McADAMS, Robert McNeil, Robert Anan, later of Emmittsburg, in May, 1741; Robert Long, in September, 1739; Hugh Woods, in March, 1741; Samuel Gibson, Duncan Evans and Robert Gibson, in October, 1736; Thomas Martin, in May, 1741; Robert Brumfield, in September, 1739; Thomas Tedford, in May, 1740.

Dear Beth: (Nov.13, 2000) My wife and I visited Ayrshire, including Straitton in August in search of her McAdams ancestor, John who settled in York PA in 1755. with wife, Sarah Sloss. We did find his baptism in 1729 to an earlier John and Agnes McConchie. Your Janet may have been a sister of Quintin McAdam who had several wives (or there were several Quintins) including Janet Weil in1708 and Agnes McClure in 1712, both too late to be her parents. I do have a note, James McAdam ca.1663-1726 married Janet Crawford in 1688 in Straitton from notesbookds at the heritage center at Carsphairn. One of the Quintons was Laird of Waterhead.Sincerely, Ted Wright
