Bekker was also a violent man. In 1701 he was banished to Mauritius after he assaulted Jan Stevensz Botma. Before being send away he however escaped inland. He must have stayed close by because his wife gave birth to a number of children during his period of exile. In 1710 he was eventually caught for the treatment of his slave, Maria van Ceylon. He viciously assaulted her after which he hanged her above his fireplace. She sustained first degree burns. For this Pieter Bekker was banished to Europe. He however joined the VOC as a soldier and was back in the Cape in 1717. Within a year he was however arrested and send to Robben Island. |
