BIOGRAPHY: Piet grew up as one of six children: two brothers, three sisters. Although their father was away often, the children grew up in an atmosphere of ambition and intellectualism, absorbinng the strong Christian teachings and example from their mother Elisabeth. BIOGRAPHY: After his education as a teacher, Piet came south, escaping the confines of Friesian nationalism, to enlarge his view of life. In the provinces of South and North Holland there was more trade and culture. This was where the seat of the Dutch government was located. BIOGRAPHY: Piet taught school first in a small rural place in the low land, polders, enclosed by dikes, where the people talked of him with affection. This place was close to the city of Leiden where he met the rich yarn merchant's daughter Wilhelmina. She was one of a lively family of 10 children. After a period of courtship, Piet put Mien before the choice to marry him or he would take off to the Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia), then one of the Dutch colonies. BIOGRAPHY: Piet and Mien were married August 5 1922 and moved to the small picturesque town of Enkhuizen to teach. Their children Jan and Maria were born there. BIOGRAPHY: Then Piet accepted a position in higher education in Voorburg teaching many evenings at the local vocational school as well. Finally he became the first principal of the brand new Christian grade school "Groen van Prinsterer school." He stayed there for 25 years till his retirement. BIOGRAPHY: In Voorburg were born: Johanna, Elisabeth, Johannes and Peter. There was an age difference of 20 years between Jan and Peter. Peter was born in 1943, during the war, and was Piet's special pride. Piet was then 51 and Mien was 4(). BIOGRAPHY: Piet was and elder in his local church all his life and also the "voorlezer", which meant he stood behind a lectern in the church on Sunday and read the Bible passages to the congregation. In his younger years he played the baritone trumpet in church (no organ). BIOGRAPHY: Many people came to him for advise. He was an intelligent, kind, tough, strict, meticulous, and hot-tempered man. He always cheated when we played games at home. He loved to travel, to dress well, to garden, and he was tight with money but occasionally he really splurged on presents. BIOGRAPHY: Piet was always interested in politics and followed the Second World War on maps and the secret radio. He was a great storyteller and he had an eye for good art. BIOGRAPHY: Piet and Mien's children were: Jan 1923- divorced. Now in Australia. Maria 1925- married to Wim Van Vliet retired bookkeeper Johanna 1928- married to Johan Eilander retired physician Elisabeth 1933- married to Gerrit Hietkamp farmer Johannes H.C. 1936-1962 Peter Aurelius1943- waterbouwkundig engineer married to Etje BIOGRAPHY: Piet was also a sharp businessman and bought and sold houses. He was never considered "good enough" for Mien by the Parmentier clan. It did not bother him much. He visited his son Jan in Australia nad traveled on a freighter around the world on this trip.
