Phyllis Marshall’s origins are unknown. Her burial record implies that she was born about 1753. Her first confirmed sighting is on 14th May 1787 when she was married at Aldingbourne in Sussex to a man named Joseph Grant, who at the time of their marriage was living in the neighbouring parish of Oving.

After their marriage, Phyllis and Joseph settled at Pagham on the Sussex coast, a few miles south-west of Aldingbourne and Oving. They had three children baptised at Pagham between 1788 and 1791.

Phyllis died in 1797, being buried at Pagham on 1st November 1797. She was said to be 44 years old when she died. Joseph outlived her by over 25 years.
