Joseph Grant's origins are unknown. His burial record suggests he was born about 1748. His first confirmed sighting is on 14th May 1787 when he was married at Aldingbourne in Sussex to a Phyllis Marshall. At the time of their marriage Joseph was living in the neighbouring parish of Oving.

Straight after their marriage, the couple moved to Pagham on the Sussex coast, where they had three children baptised between 1788 and 1791.

Phyllis died in 1797, aged 44. Joseph outlived her by over 25 years and died in 1823, being buried at Pagham on 1st July 1823. He was reportedly 75 years old and was living at Shripney in the parish of South Bersted immediately before his death.

    Possible baptism:
Anno Domini 1754 / Dec[ember] 22 Joseph Son of Charles & Mary Grant was baptiz[e]d

This would appear to be the most likely baptism. It would suggest that the aged given when Joseph died in 1823 was seven years out, but such discrepancies were not that uncommon at the time. It is s in the neighbouring parish to the one Joseph was living in at the time of his marriage, and Joseph did give his only son the name Charles. Further proof required to be sure.
