    As hereditary foresters of the King, the Davenports were literally the game wardens on the King's hunting preserves (largely in Cheshire) and had the authorized power to put poachers to death without trial. Hence, the crest of the Davenport coat of arms originally was a serf's head with a rope around its neck, signifying that the Davenports had the power to hang without appeal to the King. Davenports who went on Crusades to the Holy Land upon their return substituted the head of a Saracen with a rope around his neck

    4. JOSEPH4 DAVENPORT [4th] (DAVID [5th], JOSEPH [6th], ISAAC [7th]) was born Abt. 1760 in Granville County, North Carolina. He married MARGARET FLOYD, daughter of ANN.

    Notes for JOSEPH DAVENPORT [4th]:
    Moved as a boy to South Carolina with his parents; fought with the British at the Battle of Kings Mountain, South Carolina in October of 1780; moved to Greenville County, South Carolina probably in late 1803 after the death of his father; made his Will 11 Apr 1804 in Greenville County, South Carolina naming wife, Margaret, and children: James [3rd], Robert, John, Joseph, Sarah, Francis, Levina, Busesy (?), and Polly. Executors: wife Margaret and Hudson Berry. Witnesses were his cousin William Davenport and former neighbor in Newberry County, Jesse Kirby. He sold 250 acres of land that had been left him by his grandfather, Joseph, in 1788 on 14 Jan 1805 and is believed to have died between 1805 and 1810 when Margaret is listed as Head of Household in Greenville. Joseph's son, John, was deeded a gift of 5 slaves back on 19 Feb 1803 by his grandfather.
