There is much confusion about the second wife of Virgil Matthew Shaw. Family information suggests that her given names were Phoebe Anne (she went by Ann) and that she was born in Virginia. Her maiden name as given in her son Virgil's birth record was McNees*. The family apparently had reason to associate the surname Miles with her, and believed that it might be a previous married name. However, it appears that she may have been Phoebe Alberta Miles, born 27 Dec 1919 in Elizabeth City, Virginia.

* Is it possible that McNees is a transcription error?

According to family, Phoebe Anne married Virgil in Tennessee or Virginia upon his return trip home from Tucson after his first divorce. They then moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico because the climate was easier on Phoebe's allergies. She had 2 children prior to her marriage to Virgil Shaw - an unknown daughter who did not live with her, and a son named Jonny who joined her new family and took the name Shaw.
