Philip Shoe/Shew was born about 1750, and first appears in Guilford County, NC in 1778 in a Land Grant to a neighbor. He moved most of his family in about 1800 to Wilkes Co., NC where the spelling became Shew. He died about 1832 in Wilkes County. There was only one family by that name in the county. 22:31, 7 September 2007 (EDT)~ Virtually all of the Shoe/Shew family members in America descend from Philip Shoe, who was a landowner in Guilford County by 1780. There is a Shoe Road there now in the lower left of the county near the Alamance County line. He and most (but not all) of his children moved to Wilkes County NC about 1800. The spelling changed to Shew in Wilkes County. His son was John Philip (or just Philip Jr.) born about 1793 who married Sarah "Sally" York in 1814. 22:31, 7 September 2007 (EDT)~ The surname Shoe is discussed in a lengthy article at http://houseofnames.com/fc.asp?sId=&s=shoe Please note that the surname Shew (which Shoe was changed to eventually) is of Irish and Scottish origin, while Shoe is of German origin. |
