The first son of HENRY 2.1 was baptized Dec. 26, 1817, witnessed by Susannah & Jacob Sheetz, his aunt and uncle ( 1 ). He came to Elkhart Co., In. in 1830 and later became a member of the Pioneer's Ass'n, of Elkhart Co. ( 2 ). As he was only about 14 he may not have stayed in IN but returned to Somerset Co., PA. He married ca 1841 and bought an 80 acre farm on 3/22/1842 in Jackson Twp., Elkhart Co., In. for $360. ( 3 ). By 1850 they were living next door to his parents in Benton Twp. After his first wife's death he remarried in 1851 and in Sept. of that year bought an 80 acre farm for $425.00 in Osolo Twp. ( 4 ) across the road from his sister, Susannah Philson. His second wife died early in 1860 and when the Civil War started in 1861 he joined the Union Army at age 45. He gave the younger children to relatives to raise and the older ones were on their own.

On Dec. 4, 1861 he became a private of Co. F. 48th Reg. IN.. Vol. at Camp Ellis, In. for the duration of the war. While drilling on the ice at Camp Ellis, that winter, he fell and suffered a rupture. He served in Kentucky and Tennessee. On May 6, 1862 was sent to a hospital in Hamburg, TN. then transferred to the Marine hospital in Evansville, IN. where during severe retching he ruptured himself in the stomach. Later he convalesced at Cairo, Ill, where he was honorably discharged for disability on Nov. 4, 1862 ( 5 ). These papers describe him as being 5'6" tall, fair complexion with hazel eyes and dark hair.

His third marriage was to MARGARET MIDDLETON,in Elkhart, Indiana on 15 Aug. 1861 and divorced her on Jan. 4, 1866 in Elkhart Co., In. His lawyer was MICHAEL SHUEY his 2nd wife's brother ( 6 ). By 8 Sept. 1867 he marriaged VIENNA ELLIOTT IN Clear Creek, Jasper Co., Iowa. Cant't find any rec of divorce or death, not with any one in Kanasas Cences of 1875. By Sept. 10, 1868 he was living in Caldwell Co., MO when he applied for and later received a disability pension as due to the 2 ruptures he was unable to do any manual labor. On May 15, 1875 he married for the 5th time to MARY J. MORGAN at Fredonia, Wilson Co., KS by Judge Wm. Stivers ( 7 ). She divorced him on Oct. 4, 1882 at Fredonia, KS the decree to be final when she paid all the fees ( 8 ). He returned to Elkhart Co. and lived the remainder of his life with his daughter, SARAH KARN 4.16, on their farm. This last marriage only became known to his family after his death when she came forward and claimed his last pension check. Evidently she had not paid the divorce fees.

Philip's first two wives were named Sarah and both died in child birth with the infants also dying. His first wife died late in 1850 or early 1851 as she was listed in the 1850 census ( 9 ). Her tombstone says 1849 but when JOHN M. 4.18 erected the large red jasper tombstone, sometime in early Feb. 1982 (10) , it fell on her's smashing it and evidently the family did not remember the correct date.
