The first son of Philipp Burbach, was 7 or 8 years old when the family moved to what is now Northampton Twp., Somerset Co., PA. from Lancaster Co., PA. He was only 8 when his father took up 165 acres in his name which was surveyed on June 17 & 18, 1789 with a warrant dated Jan. 28, 1793 ( 1 ). In about 1780's that the Name chaned from Burbach to Poorbaugh and Georg was not used for his first name in any
    records.

After his marriage in 1806 he built a home on his property and lived there where some of his children were born. On Jan. 18, 1815 the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania by Patent confirmed this property to Henry. This Patent is enrolled in Patent Book H, vol. 12, page 127, in the State Court House in Harrisburg, PA. ( 2 )

On Sept. 18, 1815 Henry bought from Andrew & Christena Emrick a tract of land called Emsworth Situate in Allegheny Twp. now Northampton Twp. containing 303 acres which was adjacent to his father-in-law, Jacob Burkhart's, farm for which he paid 175 pounds (3).

He evidently worked both farms until he sold the first one of 165 acres on Dec. 1, 1818 to William Conrad, a house carpenter, for $150.00. The description of this property is most interesting as there are no sentences punctuation words are capitalized with out rhyme or reason.

".....Beginning at a post thence by land of John Peters north 17 and 1/2 degrees east 33 perches and 3/10 to a post north 33 and 1/2 degrees west 41 and 8/10 perches to a post thence by land of Margaret Grott north 28 degrees east 38 and 9/10 perches to a Chestnut north 16 degrees west 42 perches to a Chestnut Oak north 34 degrees east 105 and 3/10 perches to a post thence by land of John Wertz south 25 degrees east 106 and 8/10 perches to a post by Vacant Barrens south 82 and 1/2 degrees east 108 and 6/10 perches to a post thence by land of Philip Burbough south 12 degrees east 78 and 5/10 perches to a poet thence by said Land and Land of Joseph Rhoads south 80 degrees west 221 and 8/10 perches to the Beginning Containing 165 Acres and Allowance of 6% for roads ( etal.....)". This Indenture was signed by Henry in German using his German name of Burbach and Elizabeth made her mark with the name spelled Burbough (4).

Henry and his son-in-law, Hertz Kaiser, on Dec. 9, 1844 bought some of the farm of his father-in-law, Jacob Burkhart, who had died in October 1840, and sold it on April 2, 1847 to William Sturtz for $725.00. In this deed Henry signed in English using the name Poorbaugh ( 5 ). He was disposing of his property in preparation for moving to In at age 66.
