[edit] NotesPhillip Marsteller (1742-1803),Lancaster, Pennsylvania became a Colonel during the American Revolution and was one of six pallbearers at George Washington's 1799 funeral. To do the honors at Washington's funeral; Mrs. Washington designated the Masonic Fraternity to take charge of the funeral. She requested, however, that Colonel Philip Marsteller, who was not a Mason, be a pall bearer. The five remaining pall bearers were all Masons.
