Facts and Events
Coldwater Courier and Republican, Sept. 11, 1900 Obituary After an absence of only three months, the sad message was received in North Bethel by Mrs. Isaac Butcher, that her only brother, Philip Harkness, died September 4th, in Iowa, after an illness of several weeks. It will be remembered that he, with his family, started about the 1st of June, on an overland trip to the western states. The remains were brought back and reached here Thursday morning. Ed Harkness of Batavia, a cousin, met the family in Chicago. The funeral was held at the school house Friday, September 7th, Rev. Cole, the pastor officiating. Mr. Richard Harkness, an uncle of the deceased from the west, of over 80 years, made the very heartfelt prayer. The remains were laid at rest in the Lockwood cemetery. Mr. Harkess was born in 1859, on the farm known as the Harkness homestead, one half mile east of the school house, and has resided here the most of his life. He leaves a wife, four small children and one sister as immediate relatives. References
