    'Philip Groff was one of the early merchants of Sharpsburg and a man of superior business ability. He became the owner of large estates in and around Sharpsburg. He died at the age of sixty-seven years, and was buried in the family buriel-ground at Keeysville. Philip Grove was twice married. By his first wife, Catharine Hess, he was the father of six children: Jacob H., Mary, Elias, Samuel, Joseph, and Lavinia; and by his second wife, Mrs. Susan Hess, born Locher, he had two sons, Daniel and Stephen, and one daughter, Catharine.'
